had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt romney just said. he does not believe abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. okay. then in september, here was mitt romney telling david gregory on "meet the press" that he's not going to repeal all of obama care. he says he will keep part of obama care. but the part that requires coverage for people with pre-existing conditions.

his macho vision for the country will and it should. ryan and romney are pushing a radical remaking of the social contract that americans have relied on for many decades. it's a investigation that includes a budget where 62% of the cuts come from the poor. cuts to medicaid, cuts to food stamps, pell grants, all while cuts to the defense department and oil industry continue as usual. ryan will have to defend that record tonight and he'll have to defend comments like these. >> before too long we could become a society that we were never, ever intended to be. we could become a society where the majority of americans are makers, not takers. they believe the american idea. only 30% want the welfare state. >> takers and makers. it's a distorted view of the american people and a deeply cynical one and it will be challenged tonight by another view. >> we have a fundamentally different values set than these guys do. we believe america does well. america's always prospered when hard work is rewarded. when everyone has a fair shot. everyone plays by the same rules. everyone gets a fair shake.

mitt romney and paul ryan are doing is trying to hide their positions. they're trying to be deceptive and deceitful. because i think what they realized after a convention that was pretty disastrous for them, where it was clear their positions were headed nowhere in terms of their success, now what they've tried to do is hide their true positions on prohi t prohibiting insurance companies from dropping people or denying them coverage for pre-existing conditions, on the fact that they have a $5 trillion tax cut plan that would increase taxes on the middle class, on the fact that when it comes to medicare, they sled the health care safety net and turn it into a voucher system. and their plan does effect seniors. so they're trying to hide their positions and hope the people don't notice. >> do you expect vice president biden to try to parse the can i have difference stdifferences? because the two have different views, that is that ryan is more conservative when it comes to these issues. >> i expect vice president biden will be very clear about the stark and clear contrasts between the two
